Thyroid Diseases and Diabetes

Thyroid gland is a butterfly shaped organ that releases the thyroid hormones, it helps regulates the stored energy in our body.  To make it simple, it has something to do with metabolism.

There are studies that having diabetis makes you prone to thyroid diseases.  Just like any other diseases, which are connected with diabetes, having either a low blood sugar or high blood sugar makes the disease deadlier.  Type 1 diabetes is reported as having the high risk of developing thyroid problems but it doesn’t mean that if you have type 2 diabetes then you won’t have to worry about it.  The percent of developing thyroid diseases is higher compared to that of a man.

As I already mentioned that it has something to do with your metabolism, if your metabolism slows down then you might notice that your blood sugar goes down too.  In reverse, your metabolism speeds up, your blood sugar level goes up.  Metabolism affects how our body reacts with food and thus it also affects the glucose levels present on our body since anything that we eat gives us glucose in our body.

I have gathered a list of facts that may constitute thyroid disease in the future:

  1. Family history of thyroid disease
  2. You already have a condition that affects the immune system such as Type 1 diabetes or rheumatoid arthritis
  3. You are a woman over the age of 40
  4. You are a woman who has recently given birth
  5. You are a man over the age of 65.
